Year 1

Term 1, 2020

What a fantastic start we have had in Year 1! The children have arrived back at school fresh from the holidays and are excited to start their new learning. We welcome Mrs Stone who will be working in 1H for the first few weeks of Term 1 and many of you will know Miss Howell who joins us from the Prep Area, we welcome them both to our team.

The Year 1 teachers this year are: Miss Howell, Miss Gage, Mrs Howarth, Miss Lumsden and Miss Ong. The area leader and writing coach is Mrs Parsons.

Homework
In Year 1 we promote ‘reading for pleasure’, we would love our students to enjoy reading themselves and to enjoy listening to lots of different stories. As part of the Year 1 homework routine please encourage your child to read every night and record this in their ‘Home Reading Journal’. Ten minutes of reading every day can make a real difference to your child’s learning. Please see the attached guide for information on how to support your child with their home reading.

Inside your child’s reading folder are sight words – please help your child practise reading and spelling these words. Please do not spend more than 30 minutes on homework each day as your child will be quite tired after their day at school. It is also important that your child has a good night’s sleep so they are refreshed and ready for learning. We recommend at least ten hours sleep for children in Year 1.

Mathletics - can be accessed at home and is an excellent resource to revise what has been taught in the classroom. Your child’s username and password for these websites can be found in their ‘Reading Folder’.

Oxford Reading Buddy – can also be accessed from home and contains many stories your child can either read or listen to. We will send the logins home in week 5.

Themed Unit

Throughout Term One students will be focusing on the theme “All About Me”. We are aiming on settling into new routines in the classroom and getting to know our new friends. We will be talking to the children about topics such as who is in their family and what they like to do as a family on the weekends. We will also be revising the Four C’s (Care, Courtesy, Common Sense and Cooperation) to ensure the children are aware of the expectations of behaviour at our school.

Seesaw App

The Year One classes will be using the Seesaw App this year. Seesaw is a great way for you to connect with your child's learning at school. When connected to your child's journal, you will be able to see some of the work that they are doing in class.

You will receive instructions from your child's teacher on how to connect to Seesaw – these will again be in your child’s reading folder.

Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher if you have any concerns. Please try to make an appointment with your child’s teacher where possible.

We are looking forward to working with all our amazing students and families this year.
